Immediate action required: Urgent Update: Meningitis Outbreak in the Canterbury Area

UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed 13 cases of invasive meningococcal disease in the Canterbury area, with two people sadly having died. [gov.uk]

Who should take action now?

UKHSA advises anyone who visited Club Chemistry on 5, 6 or 7 March to come forward for preventative antibiotics, even if you feel well.
Multiple temporary antibiotic clinics are open across Canterbury, Broadstairs and local NHS sites. Full details are available from Kent & Medway ICB. [kentandmed...icb.nhs.uk]

A patient helpline, run by UKHSA is now available

Patients can call 0344 225 3861 Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm if they have no symptoms but are concerned they have been in contact with a confirmed case or have a general enquiry.

Symptoms to look out for

Meningococcal disease can progress very quickly. Seek urgent medical help if you notice:

  • A rash that does not fade under pressure
  • Sudden high fever
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Cold hands/feet
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Confusion, extreme sleepiness, or seizures

These symptoms have been highlighted by UKHSA as key warning signs requiring immediate action. [gov.uk]
